Alfred Wallis spent most of his life as a seaman and fisherman in Cornwall, only turning to painting at the age of seventy. Although he painted from memory, his evocative images of ships, fishing vessels and the Cornish landscape were based on a lifetime of direct experience.
You can also join Robert in an online conversation exploring the life and work of Alfred Wallis, inspired by their current exhibition Alfred Wallis Rediscovered at Kettles Yard.
Drawing on Robert Jones’s extensive research into the life and work of Alfred Wallis, the conversation will explore how Wallis’ intimate understanding of the Cornish landscape and wealth of nautical knowledge can help us to interpret and appreciate the artworks that he made in later life, and to dispel myths and assumptions around Wallis’ work.
