Remarkable Result for Edward Theodore Compton’s Alpine Landscape...

1st January 0001

We are delighted about the outstanding sale of Edward Theodore Compton’s magnificent 1894 oil painting, An Alpine Landscape, which featured in our June Fine Art Sale. It achieved £17,500 (inclusive of buyer’s premium), significantly surpassing its pre-sale estimate of £12,000.

This captivating work, signed and dated by the artist, measures 62 x 113 cm and is believed to be the piece exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1894 under the title Mountains of Valpellie from Mont Brulé (no.10). Compton’s masterful rendering of Alpine grandeur (his signature subject), was on full display in this work, showcasing the artist’s technical precision and deep reverence for mountainous landscapes.

The strong result reflects the enduring appeal of Compton’s Alpine scenes and the growing market demand for 19th-century European landscape painting. Despite minor condition notes, such as slight stretcher bruising, craquelure near the lower edge, and some light retouching visible under UV, the painting presented very well with its original vitality intact. It drew significant interest from bidders. This is a testament not only to Compton’s stature among collectors of mountain art but also to the quality and provenance of the work offered.

Edward Theodore Compton (1849–1921) was a renowned English-born artist who spent most of his life in Germany. He is celebrated for his detailed and dramatic depictions of the Alps, which he explored extensively as both a painter and accomplished mountaineer. His work blends artistic skill with accurate landscapes, a rare mix that still attracts collectors today.

“That really is seriously impressive research ... and what is particularly impressive is that you actually bothered to do it ! I strongly suspect that many firms would have simply stuck a lot number on them ... but - yet again - I continue to be impressed ... by everyone at Lawrence’s !”
