Side table takes centre stage in furniture auction...
16th April 2019
Lawrences’ Spring Fine Art sale in Crewkerne concluded on April 12th with a fine selection of clocks, works of art, furniture and carpets. There were many high prices but some of the best in each section included a Regency rosewood and brass bracket clock by Viner & Co (£3750); a large George IV bell metal imperial peck measure (£2125); a George III brass chandelier (£2500); and £10,750 for a sofa and two chairs by Howard that had cost just over £400 from a London dealer in 1973. A fine quality Regency mahogany tub or library chair made £5250 and three tables, all very different, reflected the variety of the sale: a fruitwood gateleg dining table from c.1700 made £3250, a rosewood and specimen marble library table was set with 200 tiles of marble and made £6500 and a George II mahogany side table with a marble top and exceptional carving was bid to £18,750. The sale was rounded off by a good group of carpets and rugs, led by a Ushak from Central Anatolia and a large Feraghan from West Iran that made £5000.
