A SILVER VESTA CASE TO AN OFFICER IN THE BORDER REGIMENT.
A silver vesta case of rounded rectangular form engraved 'Bridekirk Parish, Lieut J. Hayton M.C. Border Regt. 1914-18. Hallmarked for George Unite & Sons, Birmingham, 1919. Joseph J Hayton was a temporary Lieutenant in the Border Regiment serving with the 1st and 2nd Battalions. His Military Cross was gazetted on the 3rd March 1917, An extract from the Border Regiment history is included 'on New Years eve a patrol of three went out under Second-Lieutenant J.Hayton and came suddenly face to face with two of the enemy. Young Hayton's revolver had slipped round his belt and he was unable to draw it, but with ready presence of mind he 'drew' his pipe and pointed it threateningly at the head of one of the enemy who murmured 'Kamerad', put up his hands and was taken prisoner ...' p2194. 55x45 mm.
