* The sitter was the fourth child of John Thornton Leslie Melville and his (second) wife Sophia Thornton., later 11th Earl and Countess of Leven and Melville, who were close friends of the artist. They kept Richmond busy with commissions from 1835-1873 and the artist produced no fewer than fifteen portraits of the family
