ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM SALTER (1804-1875) PORTRAIT OF JOHN SPRING, OF THE 12th EAST SUFFOLK REGIMENT OF FOOT Standing long half length, wearing uniform, oil on canvas 26.5 x 22cm.
*The sitter is Captain John Spring, but the uniform is that of the 63rd (West Suffolk) Regiment of Foot. John Spring was an Ensign in the 12th Foot in 1829 and a Lieutenant in the 12th from May, 1833. He exchanged or transferred into the 63rd at some point between then and 1835, when he is listed as serving in the 9th Foot, and he died as a Lieutenant in the 9th in 1837.
