LIVERPOOL SCHOOL, MID-19th CENTURY
THE SAILING SHIP IDAS, OUTWARD BOUND OFF THE TUSKAR ROCK, SOUTH EAST IRELAND
Oil on canvas
64 x 100.5cm.
* The perilous seas around Tuskar Rock were a test for any mariner, so reaching the open ocean beyond was a relief for a shipmaster. Idas, 144 feet in length and 706 tons, was built in the USA in 1848 but recorded as the property of Klingender Bros of Liverpool by 1854. The red houseflag with the owners' initials KB suggests a date of c.1854-1857. She was wrecked in 1865, at that time under the ownership of Adamson & Co.
