*John Waddell (1828-1888) was a Scottish railway contractor and engineer, who served for many years as Provost of Bathgate, and was proprietor of the Easter Inch estate. He constructed the Scarborough to Whitby Railway, the Whitby and Loftus Line. He also built a bridge across the Thames at Putney (1882), and constructed the tunnel under the Mersey.
