A BOER WAR TO FIRST WORLD WAR GROUP OF FOUR TO THE ROYAL NAVY. A group of four comprising Queen's South Africa Medal with Tugela Heights and Relief of Ladysmith clasps named to 176409 J.Ousley H.M.S. Terrible. This medal with the second type reverse with 'ghost dates'. A China War Medal 1900 named to J. Ousley A.B. HMS Terrible, possibly renamed. War Medal and Victory medals named to 17640- J.Ousley L.S. R.N. Unmounted but with apparently original ribbons. John Ousley was born on the 15th of March 1878 in Southampton. H.M.S. Terrible, and her sister ship H.M.S. Powerful were the largest Cruisers in the world when they were commissioned. Built by Thompson at Clydebank from 1894, they were designed to compete with the large Russian ships of the time. Used as a troop ship during the Great War she was disarmed in 1915 and eventually sold for scrap in 1932. 261 Two clasp QSA's were awarded to HMS Terrible, 706 of the 969 China War Medals were awarded without clasp.
