THE MAMELUKE OF SIR H H BRADFORD KCB DOW RCD AT WATERLOO.
Sir Henry Bradford's Mameluke and steel scabbard, carried by the gallant officer who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Waterloo. Ivory chequered grip with gilt mounts, the blade of 28" length with Arabic panel. A true fighting blade, later mounted by a Sword Maker to suit Sir Henry's taste. The steel scabbard with two loop mounts, etched at the throat with; 'Worn by Lt Colonel Sir Henry Bradford KCB, During the Peninsula War and at Battle of Waterloo when he was mortally wounded.
Several years ago the sword was re-united with that of his eldest brother, Sir Thomas Bradford GCB GCH.
Lt Colonel Sir Henry Hollis Bradford was the third and youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Bradford of Woodlands nr Doncaster. Later resided at Ashdown Park, Sussex.
Ensign without purchase in the 4th Foot Guards 6/11/1801. Purchased at Lieutenancy in January 1801. Appointed A D C to the Earl of Chatham, served in the Peninsular War. Including Battles at Corunna, Salamanca, Vittoria, The Pyrenees, Nivelle, Orthes and Toulouse. At the Battle of Waterloo as Quarter Master General 1st Regt of Foot Guards, where he was mortally wounded. He died in France at Vacherie on the 7th December 1816. Buried at Storrington Church Sussex. Awarded the Dutch Order of William and the Russian Order of St Vladimar.
