‡STANLEY ANDERSON, CBE, RA (1884-1966)
THE WAYFARER
Engraving, 1941, signed, titled, inscribed Line engraving and Edition 40 prints in pencil, unframed
16.25 x 17cm.
* Set in the midst of War, the apparently contented men in this pub are at odds with the rampage of modernity beyond the panelled walls. Goldsmith's poem tells of the simple and uncomplicated ways of countryfolk who have no time for the Cinema Dope for Machine Slaves alluded to on the small poster pinned to the wall. Anderson's depiction of the eponymous wayfarer was based upon his own idea of Christ: the subtle reference to the arrival of a welcome but unexpected face (as found in any depiction of the Supper at Emmaus) becomes at once a 20th Century story.
