‡EDWARD BAWDEN, CBE, RA (1903-1989)
SAFFRON WALDEN CHURCH INTERIOR, NO.2
Signed and dated 1975, watercolour and pencil
49.5 x 64.5cm.
* Bawden's links with Saffron Walden were formative and (almost) lifelong. As a youngster, he was transferred from an infants' school in Braintree to the Friends' School in the town and he impressed his headmaster sufficiently to be recommended to the Cambridge School of Art. The town had therefore played a crucial role in determining Bawden's career but it also drew him back in 1970 after the death of his wife and the productive Great Bardfield era that had spanned four decades. He settled in the town anew, retracing in his art some of the places that had first inspired him when a youngster. From Bawden's last home in Park Lane, it was barely two minutes' walk to St. Mary's Church.
