A BOWIE KNIFE WITH HORN HILT.
A Bowie knife having an I* X L marked 10" blade, with clipped point, a nickel plated crossguard. Horn grips with rivetted fixings, complete with a brown leather scabbard and frog. the I*X L mark was used by George Wostenholm & Son who from 1847 worked at Washington Works, Sheffield.
Famous for his Bowie Knives and trade with the USA, during the mid-late 1800's. From a family of cutlers he many times visited the USA, by sailing and later Steam Ships. Not all Americans liked the Bowie Knife, some thought them Barbaric and legislated to amend or ban them.
