Lot 1594
MANNER OF HANS HOLBEIN (c.1497-1543), Circa 1700
PORTRAIT OF SIR THOMAS MORE (1478-1535), HUMANIST SCHOLAR, LAWYER AND STATESMAN
Bears date MDXXVIIII, oil on panel
69.5 x 56cm.
* Derived from Holbein's famous 1527 depiction of More (New York, Frick Collection, 75 x 60cm). This picture follows in the tradition of a `corridor portrait`, designed to provide decorative and instructive furnishing in the Long Gallery of a house of the 17th- or 18th Century. The pose is almost identical to the central character in Holbein's group portrait of the family of More (now lost, but a sketch survives in Basle).
Provenance: Acquired by Colonel Charles Thomas John Moore (1827-1900) of Frampton Hall; thence by descent to Valerie Tunnard-Moore, Guernsey
