with a moulded border & a "stand-away" hinge, the cover flat-chased and engraved with a couple dancing*, beneath a canopy between two vases of flowers and within a scrollwork surround, gilt interior, struck only with the lion's head erased, c.1710; 2.75" (7 cms) long; 1.6 oz
*The two dancing figures are taken from one of a series of designs for snuff box covers, published as "Essais de tabatieres a l'usage de graveurs et ciseleurs, inventees et gravees par G. Roberday", in Paris in 1710 (Snowman, A.K, 1990, p.37, pl.32)
