rectangular with engine-turning, the cover with a chased foliate border and engraved central coat of arms with crest and motto*, the base inscribed "This box, accompanied by the Freedom of the City of Dublin, was presented to Mr Samuel Gray, Ballybay, county Monoghan for his manly and determined conduct in heading the Protestants of that town when it was threatened to be entered by one of the POPISH DEMAGOGUES and thereby averting the calamitous occurrences that were likely to ensue from such a rash and daring proceeding Oct. 1828", gilt interior, by Joseph Wilmore, Birmingham 1828; 33" (8.5 cms) long; 4.3 oz
