* Alizarin is an organic compound used in the production of dark red dyes, principally within the textile industry. Traditionally derived from plants of the madder genus, it has been produced synthetically and is also known as Mordant Red II and Turkey Red.
Provenance: Collection of Mr and Mrs John D. Rockefeller III (label on backboard). John Davison Rockefeller (1906-1978) was a prominent philanthropist with a special interest in the Institute of Pacific Relations which drew him to work in Asia and Australasia.
