‡LIONEL EDWARDS (1878-1966)
BAY HORSE IN A STABLE
A pair, both signed and dated 1905, watercolour
Each 36 x 52.5cm. (2)
* In 1905, Edwards was newly married and living at Boars Hill, near Radley, Oxfordshire. Working from an old carpenter's shop as he had no proper studio, Edwards determined in that year to earn his living from hunting subjects. He sought to emulate Gilbert Holiday's ability to capture natural movement in his subjects and to compete toe-to-toe with the skilled photographers of the day. These early posed equine portraits were to diminish in his oeuvre from then on.
