‡JOHN PIPER, CH (1903-1992) THREE SOMERSET TOWERS: RUISHTON, ILE ABBOTTS [sic], KINGSBURY EPISCOPI Three, signed and titled and dated 1954 on the backboard, mixed media, on three sheets, framed as one Each 68 x 35cm. Provenance: London Marlborough Fine Art; London, Browse & Darby Exhibited: London, Marlborough Fine Art, John Piper Retrospective Exhibition, March-April 1964, no.203 * Piper's enduring fascination with the glories of British ecclesiastical architecture drew him inevitably towards the noble and soaring towers of churches. His Neo-Romantic sensibilities ensured that the grandeur of these ancient buildings was captured with skill but without painstaking fussiness in the depiction of the buildings' myriad intricate details. Piper's evident admiration for the stonemason's craft blends with a subtlety of colour and line to produce images that seem to shimmer in a haze of history.

“I wanted to reach out to you to simply say thank you for your wonderful service - along with the support of Lawrences for the sale of my Grandads coin collection. The brochure was just wonderful. My Grandad would have been so proud that his coins would be included in such a prestigious listing and be sold by such a well respected company. The sale of the coins has meant that I have kept my promise to my Grandad by selling the coins to a collector and investing the monies received. The monies received have been invested into my property as an over payment on the mortgage. How very special. Thank you so much - it’s been a wonderful relationship and I will highly recommend yourself and Lawrences to all.”
