* Piper's enduring fascination with the glories of British ecclesiastical architecture drew him inevitably towards the noble and soaring towers of churches. His Neo-Romantic sensibilities ensured that the grandeur of these ancient buildings was captured with skill but without painstaking fussiness in the depiction of the buildings' myriad intricate details. Piper's evident admiration for the stonemason's craft blends with a subtlety of colour and line to produce images that seem to shimmer in a haze of history.
