Lot 815
‡SALLY ARNUP (1930-2015)
GREYHOUND
Bronze, signed II/X, dark brown patina, upon a slate base
23cm high; 40cm long approx.
Provenance: The collection of John Skeaping, RA and of his wife, Marjory Skeaping; thence by descent.
* In John Skeaping's 1977 autobiography Drawn from Life, he writes (page 204) that 'Sally Arnup was an unconventional girl with a strong personality. She used to bring her baby into the school [the Royal College of Art, where Skeaping was professor of sculpture from 1953-59] with her and keep it, like a puppy, in a cardboard box in the class-room whilst she worked' and, on page 245, he writes of Sally Arnup that she 'was a one-time pupil of mine and probably the best animalier of today'. Arnup was also taught by Frank Dobson and became head of sculpture at York Art School 1958-1972. Some of the vivid immediacy of her subject matter is the result of working directly from life.
