A Commission given at the Hague from John Duke and Earl of Marlborough appointing John Burton Captain Lieutenant in the regiment of Foot commanded by Colonel Gilbert Primrose, dated 4th April 1700, signed by Marlborough.
A Commission given at the Court of St James from the Duke and Earl of Marlborough appointing John Burton to the rank of Ensign in his own Regiment of Foot on the first (?) of March 1702/3, signed by Marlborough.
A Commission given at the camp at Steffelt from the Duke and Earl of Marlborough appointing John Burton Lieutenant, dated 21st August 1704, signed by Marlborough.

John Burton fought in 34 battles and sieges as well as taking up arms against ‘Prince Charlie’. Richard Burton (1718-93) Richard Burton was the son of John and Edith, he married Frances Ward from Sweden in 1742.

The Commission awarded by Francis Earl of Huntingdon Baron Hastings etc issued on the 14th of February 1764, signed Huntingdon and with wax seal.
A further commission from Charles Marquis of Rockingham appointing Richard Burton Lieutenant Colonel of the Militia Battalion of Foot and Captain of a Company in that Militia Commanded by George Savile. Burton was to use his best endeavours to keep his men in good order 10th April 1766, signed Rockingham and with wax seal.
Sir John Burton 1744 – 1809. Sir John was the son of Richard, an Ensign in West Riding Regiment of militia and in the 56th Regiment of Foot and commissioned into the 4th Dragoon Guards in 1768; later serving in the King’s Bodyguard and was knighted at Windsor in 1805. He married Honor Thursby in 1770, the daughter of Henry Thursby of Abbingdon Abbey Northampton, she died in 1776, he then married Philippa daughter of Captain Foster R.N. A commission appointing John Burton, Gentleman, Ensign in the Company of the Militia Battalion of Foot raised within the Wapontake or Hundred of Agbridge and Horley Part of the West Riding of the County of York Commanded by Sir George Savile Baronet. Dated September 1762, signed Rockingham and with wax seal

With a portrait miniature believed to be John Burton in military uniform with yellow facings, oval, 6.5 x 5.5cm, on ivory, in original distressed red leather case. English School c1800.
Sir Richard Burton (1773 – 1855). Son of the above John Burton, he was commissioned into the 3rd King’s Own Regiment of Dragoon Guards in 1792 and King’s Body Guard in 1794. He was present at the coronation of George IV and William IV when he held the role of Silver Stick, he was knighted in 1812. He married Elizabeth Crofts on the 27th April 1802 and purchased Sacketts Hill House.

With a finely painted portrait miniature of Sir Richard wearing military uniform with high black collar, 7 x 6cm with lock of hair to the distressed reverse, in original red leather case.
