ERNEST GIMSON (1864-1919) - ARTS & CRAFTS CHAIRS including a near pair of 'Pass chairs', the' ebonised ash armchairs with three horizontal splats and curved arms (88cms high), also with a high back 'Pass chair', the' ebonised ash armchair with five shaped splats and curved arms (117cms high), and five assorted splat back chairs with woven rush seats. (8) *These chairs were inherited by Frankie Young, her uncles were Basil Young and Blamire Young (an artist who lived in Australia). Basil worked as a blacksmith and architectural student at Gimson's Sapperton work shop. He then moved to Budleigh Salterton where Gimson designed a house for him. In 1913 Basil moved to Kilmington and left the house and Gimson chairs to Frankie Young. These chairs were inherited from Frankie by the present owner.
