* The Camposanto is said to have been built on holy soil brought from Golgotha by Ubaldo Lanfranchi,the archbishop of Pisa, in 1203. War damage in 1944 destroyed much of the contents including many Antiquities and notable frescoes by Gozzoli and Gaddi amongst others.
