Welcome to our Modern British & Irish Art department at Lawrences. Richard Kay, our specialist, has over 35 years of industry experience in assessing works from the major movements spanning the 20th and 21st Century.
We host three specialist auctions a year, featuring paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by Modern British artists from the very late 19th century to the present day.
In just the past two years, we have achieved some remarkable results: `Hayfield, Brayton Road, Aspatria` by Sheila Fell (£30,000), an auction record for her work; `Seated Man in Boxing Shorts` by Duncan Grant (£21,000), a bold image by a distinctive master; `Pen Y Bryn` by Sir Kyffin Williams (£15,000), a quintessentially Welsh masterpiece; `Horse` by Dame Elisabeth Frink (£9000), an image both informal and majestic; `Early Morning, Upper Horning` by Edward Seago (£9000), an atmospheric gem by the master landscape artist; `Moon Jar` by Akiko Hirai, a technically inventive stoneware artwork (£6500); `Dawn at Southwark` by C. R. W. Nevinson (£4600), a rediscovered lithograph of exceptional rarity; `Garn Fawr` by John Piper (£4000), lyrical semi-abstraction by the Neo-Romantic master; `Red Sun` by Roger Hilton (£3000), an exuberant splash of colour from the artist’s final years; and `Canoe Island` by Peter Doig (£2700), a striking screenprint by this leading Contemporary artist.
